Everyone had a time in life when they wanted to change something, but postponed the moment because of fear, self-doubt or because they imagined that they have plenty of time before them or that they are busy with more important issues. The problem is that it is very easy to get accustomed with the present and postpone a change forever or until you realize that it will be impossible to make things happen. The reality is that every time an opportunity arises, you must take advantage of it. This is a much better approach than waiting for a wake up call.
Sometimes you want to make an important change in your everyday life, but you are scared of giving up the present circumstances. You prefer to be semi-miserable your entire life than to risk a little bit and aspire to happiness. But every day that passes by without you facing what’s making you unhappy is just another wasted day. All you have to do to start constructing a better future is to stop waiting for something good to happen to you and make the change yourself.
Make a second step towards happiness by identifying what’s holding you back. You can simply make a list with the things you need to start addressing. What’s holding you back? What’s making you miserable? It can be your job or a person or your perspective on the present.
Now that you understand the imminence of change and you know the exact factors that make it necessary, you have to do something about it. When you know what’s holding you back, the situation becomes clearer. The list with all the problems that you identified is your starting point. Take each problem, analyze it exhaustively and write down the answers to that problem. Even though the options are limited and you feel constrained to choose from a limited set, in most cases the solution to a problem is the most obvious one.
If you feel that your current job is making you unhappy, try to find another position that would suit you better within the company or stop working in that company. See if your hobby can become your career or explore another industry that interests you. If a person drains your energy, try to limit your time with him/her and think of the possibility of excluding that person from your life.
People with all sorts of problems managed to achieve happiness. This is the clearest evidence that only you can do something for yourself and that you shouldn't settle for anything less than you deserve.
