Cloud bursting in simple words we can say is when someone is running out of computing resources on internal data center i.e. cloud the workload is shifted to another external cloud. This is done on the fly i.e. on demand basis. But if we consider the permutations with respect to the types of cloud such as public cloud and private cloud , there are four combinations we can see which is private to public which is the most common scenario, public to private, public to public and private to private. So if we consider the most talked and common scenario which is private cloud to public cloud in which the internal computing resource is private one and external cloud is public one. In this case private cloud is charged pay per use basis when used external cloud for handling extra workload. The deployments which we have such ability to transfer workload to external cloud then it is said to be as Hybrid Cloud.
Main task of Cloud Bursting is to move the work load. Lets take a example suppose environment is a virtual machine then we can use vMotion , when transferred workload turns running on external cloud we can route the traffic to it as there is work going on Private Cloud only.
But one thing we need to notice that do we really need a Cloud Bursting or not. Cloud bursting is essential when the infrastructures are over loaded , but if its not the case when the infrastructure is under utilized. Enterprise infrastructures do not often see work load like in case of web infrastructures which have erratic work loads on weekends. Also if datacenter is underutilized there is no point in bursting the workload to external cloud. So Cloud bursting is essentially needed when there is over utilization i.e. heavy workload on private cloud. If private cloud itself capable of handling heavy workloads then probably the Cloud Bursting is not required.
